Traditional handicrafts are made mostly for the tourist trade and these include plaited lau hala weavings of mats, hats and baskets and wood turned bowls. The traditional use of adze for wood carvings is practised only for the reconstruction of temple carvings. The most common items to find in boutique shops are contemporary art forms, Hawaiian Aloha shirts, long flower-patterned dresses and macadamia nuts.

Leis, neck garlands made from flowers, pottery sherds, shells or the like are very popular and are presented at most Hawaiian functions as well as a greeting symbol for arriving tourists.
